Nest box installation programmes as compensatory measures for photovoltaic plants are often very deficient due to their inadequate design and/or execution. A guideline based on the scientific knowledge generated over decades is provided.

The direct impact of photovoltaic plants on birdlife will largely depend on the extent to which the distribution of the affected species overlaps with Protected Natural Areas or the Natura 2000 Network.

The regulations governing the acceleration of the deployment of solar energy pose a threat to those bird species whose habitat is suitable for the installation of photovoltaic plants.

Assessing the impact of photovoltaic plants on diversity requires robust, well-designed studies that consider both taxonomic and functional diversity.

The data obtained by scientists on the distribution and abundance of animal and plant species are necessary for the preparation of sensitivity maps that will allow the deployment of renewable energies in a way that respects biodiversity.

The appropriate design of areas for accelerated deployment of renewable energies (go-to areas) requires specific field studies on the distribution of endangered species with the participation of experts.

The current deployment of photovoltaic energy is harmful to biodiversity, as witnessed by the local extinction of an endangered bird species due to the implementation of photovoltaic plants without planning and without effective public participation.

The tools put forward by Directive 2023/2413 and other renewable acceleration regulations to avoid adverse effects on biodiversity are ineffective in terms of conserving an endangered bird species.

We propose the extension of three existing Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in the Campo de Tabernas and the creation of a new SPA to increase the coverage of the Natura 2000 network in this region for five endangered species.

Campo de Tabernas is an excellent example of the semi-arid ecosystems of southeastern Spain, harboring important natural, ethnological, archaeological and landscape values. This wealth is in danger. This report analyzes the coverage that the current Natura 2000 network offers to species with unfavorable conservation status in this region.
