LAND STEWARDSHIP

With the aim of protecting the land and its wildlife, involving the people who own and use these lands and offering them a profitable alternative to help them stay in this rural environment.

We aim to lease land or compensate farmers and stockbreeders to carry out practices towards the maintenance and recovery of endangered species, such as the Black-bellied Sandgrouse.

ACQUISITION OF NEST BOXES FOR BIRDS

Some of the most emblematic species of Campo de Tabernas nest in cavities. Habitat transformation is leading to the elimination of many of these natural nesting sites. The placement of nest boxes increases their probability of permanence and even favours the extension of their distribution area.

Nest box installation programmes go far beyond the mere placement of nest boxes, because they affect the distribution of birds in the territory, their inter- and intraspecific relationships, and even their reproductive success and survival. In the framework of various projects we have developed a remarkable knowledge of where and how to place nest boxes and their implications.

MARKING BIRDS WITH GPS TO TRACK THEM

Tracking birds allows us to detect not only their movements, but also patterns and trends in their use of the environment. This information helps scientists and managers to propose and make informed decisions on how to protect the habitats they use.

A GPS (Global Positioning System) device is a gadget that, fitted to a moving bird, shows its exact geographical location (longitude and latitude) in real time. We have used this type of device to study the migration of the Roller.

CONSTRUCTION, PLACEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF DRINKING TROUGHS AND PONDS

The scarce availability of water points is a limiting factor for birds in arid and semi-arid areas, especially in the summer period, which coincides with the breeding season in our latitudes.

An essential support action for them is the construction of drinking troughs and ponds to ensure that they are supplied during the most critical periods.
